Master gardener Paul James, on one of his favorite tools:
Every now and then I come across a tool that at first seems to have no place in the garden, but later proves to be the kind of tool I can't imagine gardening without.
Such was the case when I discovered these sheep shears in a gardening catalog. I use them to trim grass, prune shrubs, cut back perennials in the fall and cut twine when my knife isn't handy. The rhythmic sound they make as they cut is a sheer delight.
So when you come across some sheep shears, buy them. They're pretty cheap and handy.
