Here's a recipe for homemade insect repellant made from citrus:

Ingredients:

rind of two or three lemons
1 qt. water

Preparation:

Start by grinding the lemon rinds, mix with a quart of water, boil for one minute and the let the mixture stand overnight.

Strain out the rinds, pour into a spray bottle and spray on plants. It's best to test the spray first by applying to one leaf and waiting 24 hours to see if there are any problems. There are no preservatives in the spray so make sure to store it in the refrigerator.
