Project: Woodland Garden

Grow It! : Episode GRW-402 -- More Projects »
Steve Lorton of Seattle has dramatically enhanced the natural beauty of a woodland setting by adding a variety of colorful, shade-loving plants. Steve began by clearing most of the undergrowth in the area, although he left ferns and certain other plants in place. He thinned the trees to allow light to filter through and increase air movement. To create paths, Steve installed the outlines of the walkways one inch below the soil line, then covered them with pine needles. As time passed, the pine needles became matted into the ground and moss formed on the surface.
