Before: There's nothing but a lot of bare ground and huge piles of redwood tree cuttings in this backyard. When it rains, the yard becomes a sea of mud.
Photo

After: The backyard has become a Montana-styled retreat, with a log shed as the perfect focal point for the theme.

...and others become stepping stones.
Homeowners Stacey and Alan Forsythe would like to turn their large, mostly dirt backyard into a play space for their two small children. Plus, the Forsythes need some creative storage for their garden tools. Designer Karen McAloon draws up a Montana-inspired design, including a log cabin storage shed, a rustic row-boat sandbox for the kids and a water feature for lots of ambiance.

A water fountain lends the sound of a bubblng brook to the yard.

Great idea for a sandbox: A used rowboat purchased cheaply online gets a faux paint job that gives it a weathered wooden look.
