Before: This bare, sloping front yard lacks interest and also has a drainage problem: every time it rains, water pools near the house. In addition to fixing the drainage problem, the homeowners would like a more pleasing front yard.

After: Sweeping, curved planting beds help create curb appeal. A steppingstone path makes walking up the hill easier, and a French drain near the porch solves the drainage problem. (Click on image for a recap of the project.)
Landscape architect Phil Bashaw transforms this bare front yard into one with lots of curb appeal. He installs a French drain in front of the porch, creates a bluestone steppingstone path beside the driveway and installs curvilinear planting beds.
