Mailboxes

Smart Design : Episode SDN-202 -- More Projects »
In this world of e-mail, it's nice to receive a letter the old fashioned way--through the mail. And what better way to welcome the parcels than in an interesting and unique mailbox?
  • A mailbox isn't just a box for receiving mail--it's the perfect outlet to add interest and personality to the outside of your home. People take pride in the curb appeal (first impression) of their homes when someone pulls into their driveway or walks up to the door so the mailbox is another way to reflect their style and personal choices.
  • Mailboxes are traditionally brass but other finishes like patina, cool copper, antique bronze and rust are also gaining in popularity.

  • Another way to add appeal to your post is to paint a design. A beautiful pink and blue floral design pops off the black background of this mailbox and is a treat to passing drivers (figure A).
  • While mailboxes can enhance the outside of the home, wall styles can also be used inside to store magazines in a living room or office.
  • When rural mail delivery began in the late 1800s people were so excited to be able to get mail delivered to their home, they hung out any container they could find from empty coal oil and syrup cans to apple crates and sugar boxes. It wasn't until 1915 when rural mailboxes were regulated in size that the now familiar tunnel-shaped mailbox was approved for rural mail delivery.
