Video: Add dimension to an outdoor wall with a hanging trellis.
Materials:

hand saw
jigsaw
power drill
2-inch galvanized screws
1 -1/2" galvanized box nails
hammer
tape measure
1"x4" cedar lumber
1"x10 " cedar lumber
1"x1" cedar trim
cedar trellis

Steps:

  1. Purchase a trellis from a home center or garden store. This project takes a ready-made trellis and encloses it in a box to create a more ornate trellis.
  2. Measure the length of the trellis and add four inches. Cut the two 1x4 cedar sidepieces using the handsaw. Measure the width, add four inches and cut the two top pieces. Attach the top to the sides with the galvanized screws after drilling pilot holes.
  3. Use a piece of 1x10 cedar for the top plate. Cut the board to the same measurement as the width of the box already assembled. Lay the trellis on top of the 1x10 board, and trace an outline of the arch. Cut out the curve using a jig saw with a scroll blade attached. Secure the board to the top of the box using box nails.

  • Attach the sides and add a bottom plate across the width of the box. Measure the length of the box after the two plates have been added, starting at the bottom of the top plate and measuring to the top of the bottom plate. Cut two side plates to that length. Attach these using box nails spaced about six inches apart (figure A).

  • Turn the box frame over and place it on a soft surface so that the front doesn't get marred (figure B). Cut the 1x1 cedar trim to the length of the inside of the box plate edges.

  • Attach trim to the inside of the box with wood screws, keeping flush with the outside edge of the side plates (figure C). Place the trellis on top of the 1x1 trim and attach using the wood screws (figure D).

  • To hang the trellis, attach a 1x2 board that is smaller than the inside width of the box on the wall with galvanized screws (figure E). Place the top of the trellis box on this board (figure F), and screw it in place from the top using wood screws.

Note: Cedar will naturally turn gray if it's not sealed or preserved. To keep it looking new, apply wood preservative with a UV protector every year.
