With the many angles of the deck overhead, Matt brings those same linear shapes into the new design. Simple traditional shapes and formal plantings will provide an interesting view from above. An L-shaped seating area complete with benches and flagstone pavers is set in one corner. This same shape is recreated underneath the deck with an L-shaped planter containing shade-loving plants, such as hosta, astilbe and lady’s mantle (Alchemilla mollis). Deep, rectangular planting beds wrap around three sides of the garden, while three upright hornbeams (Carpinus) with underplanted yews shaped into cubes anchor the new space.
