Two-View Garden

Urban Outsiders : Episode HUOUT-205 -- More Projects »
Allan Suarez and fiance Evelyn Gonzales have a history with their house, since Allan has lived there since he was a small child. However, the garden hasn't been touched since then. Added to that, they have recently installed a large deck, meaning the view from above has become just as important as the way it looks from the ground. Using flagstones and traditional plantings, host Matt James brings structure to the yard, making it a formal yet relaxed space that looks great from any direction.

Before: Big Deck, Weedy Backyard
With the addition of the large-sized deck, Allan and Evelyn have to look at their backyard from new angles. The space was originally viewed only from ground level, but now they have to take into account how it looks from above as well. They want to use the new deck and the patio below for entertaining family and friends while also having a place to relax together. In addition, Allan wants the traditional look of their Brooklyn brownstone brought outdoors with low-maintenance plantings and a cohesive design that unites the deck, home and garden together.
