Boulders

Gardening by the Yard : Episode GBY-510 -- More Projects »
Stone brings texture to the landscape and contrasts beautifully with plants and mulch, says master gardener Paul James. In his quest for more rocks, James learned these tips from Brad and Jody Porter of Hardscape Materials in Bixby, Oklahoma:
  • Many boulders can weigh up to three tons. The price for a two-ton boulder ranges from $150 to $300.

  • Lichens and moss in different shades of green add interest to rocks of all sizes.

  • Limestone boulders have plenty of character. Limestone boulders called honeycomb are full of nooks and crannies that create interesting textures. Many different types of plants and flowers find homes in the openings.

  • Maneuvering boulders on a truck and transporting them to a neighborhood lawn is no easy task and requires special equipment such as a forklift. Once the boulders are in the desired spot, fill along the edges with mulch or whatever surrounding material you choose.
