Mention the word landscaping, and most people think of plants. A number of gorgeous landscapes also feature what are commonly referred to as hardscape materials, which are basically things other than plants. Rock is the most popular hardscape material- -perfect for constructing borders, terraces, and walls, and if properly installed, the rocks can last for decades.
When it comes to paths and patios, rock is an excellent choice. From a meandering path made of flagstone plopped down on a bed of mulch to an elegant patio for outdoor entertaining, a rock project can be created to fit any gardener's budget or skill level. When combined with plants, large and small rocks can transform an otherwise ho-hum landscape into something special. When used in water features such as a pond or waterfall, rock can create the illusion of raw nature, and set a mood that is tranquil yet powerful.
Few materials can give a garden a sense of permanence the way rocks can, and few materials last as long. Brad Porter, a dyed-in-the-wool rock enthusiast, is based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. For 20 years he's been designing and installing rock-garden features of all kinds.
Every stone has its own character, and no two are the same. For a nice patio or pool deck where you want tables or chairs, select nice, smooth, flat rocks where chairs can be moved with no trouble. If it's to be in the garden to add character, look for something very rustic and weathered with a lot of moss on it. For building a fish pond, choose rock very natural and outdoorsy, maybe with interesting hues.
Brad and Jody have rocks of all shapes, sizes, thickness and colors--from gorgeous, lichen-covered boulders weighing up to 4,000 pounds to small chunks of gravel. There are different types of stone: 1) building stone, used for fireplaces and new houses and fence posts; 2) flagstone, generally a thin flat stone used for stepping stones and patios; 3) decorative boulders, nice for waterfalls or around fish ponds; and 4) decorative gravel, a ground cover.
