Wide-Open Country: Plan B
Designer Brian Waltersdorf presents a plan with two terraces. The upper terrace, one step off the back of the house, includes a pergola made of Western red cedar. A second patio would be one step below the first, with a set of stairs that leads to a bridge over a dry stream bed. An adjacent waterfall flows into a pond. A retaining wall corrects the steep change in grade. A mix of informal plantings around the potting shed includes lilacs, hostas and low-maintenance roses.
