Before: This backyard is pretty but rather simple and plain. The homeowners would like it to be welcoming to them, their new baby and company.

After: Distinct areas for entertaining and relaxing make the massive patio more functional. Furniture and accessories plus billowy curtains are chosen for their tropical look.

Before: The Zands haven't taken advantage of their lovely patio. They'd like to use it as a gathering place that feels magical and serene for outdoor naps with the baby and also a fun area for parties.

After: The boring and cracked concrete patio is disguised using redwood decking for the entertainment and lounge areas and sand in the meditation space. Once the decking is stained, pavers and stones disguise the remaining exposed patio. Bamboo shades stapled to the existing pergola provide filtered light and enhance the South Seas theme.
Jan Zands wants to treat his wife, Monika, to a special birthday surprise that she can enjoy with their new baby. Jan goes all out when he invites host Susie Coelho, the Outer Spaces crew plus designer Randy Weinstein to create a tranquil backyard retreat using a South Seas theme where the Zands can practice yoga, relax with the baby and entertain guests.

Designer Randy Weinstein's plan divides this backyard into three useful areas. One side of the patio is for outdoor dining, the other for lounging. Each will have a bamboo shade roof, with bamboo growing between, for a natural divider along with a water wall by the fireplace. Finally, a meditation area under the bougainvillea will be filled with sand.

Bender board is placed along the edge of the patio, and then the meditation area is filled with bags of sand and leveled. A stone walkway and grass mat for yoga complete it.
