After incorporating the design principles normally reserved for interiors, this outdoor space is complete with an arbor, plantings and two trellis accents.
Hosts Shari Hiller and Matt Fox use the same principles from the decorating worksheet usually used inside the home to pull together an outdoor area. Before starting, Hiller considers the following aspects of the patio and yard:

Function: grilling , eating, relaxing, sunning and gardening

Focal Point: something on the patio, a fountain, pond, trellis, etc.

Lighting: plantings, natural lighting, evening accent lights

Furniture/Furniture Arranging: height, dimension and locations need to be appropriate for activities and that it adds interest
