Before: The backyard patio is too small for the homeowners to use effectively. They want to expand the area so they have a place to relax and enjoy the view.

After: This patio garden is larger, yet with strategically placed plantings, it seems sheltered and intimate. (Click on image for a video recap of the project.)

After: On the side of the patio, beautiful plantings that will eventually reach five or six feet will provide privacy screening.

After: Landcape timbers and concrete pavers are set in a geometric pattern to mimic the panes on the patio door.

This house has a small concrete slab that serves as the backyard patio. At 4 x 7 feet, it's barely large enough to hold two chairs and allow passage from the house to the yard. The surrounding area is also plain, with just grass surrounding the patio.

The solution calls for a timber and stone terrace to extend the existing patio. Plants provide privacy and soften the foundation of the house. The result is a garden room with plenty of room to entertain, privacy from the neighbors and a pleasing view.
