Floral expert Dia Collins enhances a small space such as a balcony with bamboo, plants and flowers.
- Bamboo fencing can be found at local home-decorating stores (figure A). The bamboo varies in height, is easy to use and very inexpensive. Use twist ties to secure to wrought iron, or, if the walls are stucco, wood or cement. Insert a screw and wrap the twist tie around it, then through the bamboo.
- Green plants--Nothing makes a balcony feel more outdoorsy than lots of rich, green plants. Find an interesting wall hanger and securely fasten to the wall with screws. The plants can be either green, drapey plants like ivy or flowering plants. Hanging plants in decorative baskets also have a nice touch (figure B). Use clay pots or lightweight plastic pots to create inexpensive homes for various-sized plants (figure C). The pots won't rot from moisture and can be used to switch out seasonal plants as often as desired. Window boxes can be added decorations or borders to a balcony.
- Throw rug--An old rug that has lost its use in another part of the house can have a new life outside on the balcony. Pick a color that goes with the theme.
- Table and chairs--Now that your balcony has been transformed into a cozy garden retreat, you have to have somewhere to sit and relax. Look in local thrift shops and yard sales for a table and chair set, then add some comfy pillows.
