Basket-Weave Brick

Surprise Gardener : Episode SPG-301 -- More Projects »
A serpentine pathway can work wonders for adding depth and shape to a lawn. And each step of this particular path is an interesting basket-weave design. Landscape designer Tonya Van Der Wal demonstrates how to create this texture-rich pathway:

These stepping stones--with eight bricks per "step"--provide an interesting pathway in this yard. Here's how to begin:

1. Chalk out a winding pathway design. Measure and mark a comfortable stride for each step.

2. Each basket-weave step requires eight bricks to form a square. Create the basket-weave pattern by laying two bricks side by side in a vertical fashion, leaving 1/4" between each brick.

3. Place two more bricks side by side horizontally, next to the first two. Repeat the second row of bricks but reverse the placement of the vertical and horizontal squares, thus creating the basket-weave look.

4. Next, cut around the edge of this basket-weave square, forming lines to mark out where to cut away the grass. Move the bricks and dig out the sod. Make certain to dig deep enough to make each step level with the lawn.

5. Place a shallow layer of sand in the hole and replace the bricks in the same basket-weave pattern as earlier. Sweep sand over the bricks to fill in the spaces.
