Reviving a Row House

Top designers make the most of a small, narrow yard.

Landscapers' Challenge : Episode LSC-1211 -- More Projects »
After more than a decade in Manhattan, Tim and Ruth Ferguson moved across the river to their 100-year-old row house in colorful Hoboken, N.J. The community is loaded with personality – think of Hoboken favorite son Frank Sinatra – and the Fergusons have renovated the interior of their home to truly make it their own. Now, they're ready to do it their way with the outdoors as well. With a $25,000 budget for a much-needed backyard makeover, they turned this design challenge over to Ping Panlilio, Barry Yacker and the design team of Glenn Jacobsen and Terry McMahon.

Before: Hallway to Nowhere
Tim and Ruth's backyard is small and narrow, with a plain, deteriorating fence that drives attention to an unsightly deck and a downright ugly storage shed. Ruth jokingly calls the wooden platform "the dance floor" and complains that it eats up a lot of space without providing much seating. The Fergusons want to get rid of the deck and the shed, do something about the fence and create a comfortable space where they can relax with friends.
