A Washington, D.C., Retreat

A tiny, overgrown yard becomes an urban oasis.

Landscapers' Challenge : Episode LSC-1207 -- More Projects »
Jack Stein and Peter Meccariello’s 19th-century townhouse reflects their own style with clean lines, sophisticated furnishings and warm, inviting spaces. Unfortunately, that great design stops at the back door: Their overgrown tangle of a backyard doesn't work for relaxing or entertaining. With a budget of $25,000, Jack and Peter want to transform their urban jungle into an outdoor living space with as much personality as their home's interior.

Rising to the challenge are designers Guy Williams, David Lindoerfer and the team of David and Christy Boswell.

Before: Tortured Tangle
Jack and Peter practically need a machete to get through their overgrown backyard, which is taking over the patio and path. A recent addition to the back of the house ate up part of the small patio, and the steep steps down from the house make for an awkward entry to the outdoor space.
