If you're limited on space and are trying to choose between a vegetable garden or a flower garden, why not plant them both together? It's a great combination that is not only a feast for the eye, but for the palate as well.
Some vegetables, like scarlet runner beans, produce their own flowers, but if you'd like to mix and match your flowers and vegetables, try blue salvia with red Turkish eggplant. Or plant bright zinnias next to green beans. Mix in some brilliant Chinese spinach, pumpkins, peppers and tomatoes. This colorful combination spreads not only out, but up as well.
And don't forget the herbs. While parsley makes a flavorful garnish on the dinner plate, it also makes a wonderful dense border, contrasting well with yellow cosmos. Oregano also makes a good border, paired with some purple sweet potato vine. 'Spicy Bush' basil has a compact form that neatly masks flowers with long stems.
Finally, for a great backdrop, try this combination: Mexican sunflower that contrasts beautifully with the crimson color of amaranth, in front of delightful tomatilloes. This is one beautiful garden that will make you hungry.
