Allan Jones' 1950s home is well complemented by his retro furniture collection and playful design approach. His backyard, however, is wild and overgrown, with no apparent theme. Jones would like to bring his mid-century sense of style outdoors and create a flowing space where he can relax and entertain in privacy.

Landscape designers Khoi Vo and Mike Schoen propose bringing the indoors outside by patterning a concrete slab layout after the bookshelves in Jones' home. Landscape designer Steve Gerischer wants to create a flagstone patio with a versatile shade structure overhead that can be pulled open at night for stargazing. Jennifer Charleston and Timothy Burnett of Burnett Architects have designed a backyard with three distinct areas bordered by colorful recycled glass.

After a week of reviewing the three designs, Jones selects Steve Gerischer's plan, and Gerischer tames this wild backyard and turns it into a relaxing retro retreat. By opening up the space and extending the home's character outdoors, he has created a sleek private gathering spot where Jones can kick back and enjoy with friends or alone.
