Many traditional gardens are divided up into different areas. These "rooms" separate various plantings of herbs, vegetables and cutting flowers or create places for shade and for sitting. To create these boundaries, everything from a classic picket fence to ground coverings like mulch can be used. Coastal Living magazine's Carol Vose discusses how a garden boardwalk can work to give your garden definition and added design spark.
  • Vose says a boardwalk makes it much easier to care for plants in a large garden. She created her boardwalk out of untreated milled pine lumber.
  • Once she determined the layout, she went to work cutting out the boards. To expand the width of the entry, she attached multiple boards to each other with metal strapping and screws (figure A).
