Welcome Mats

Smart Design : Episode SDN-207 -- More Projects »
It's nice to be warmly greeted at the front door and welcome mats are not only great dirt grabbers, they're welcome additions to the overall entry decor.
  • Nothing says "welcome to my home" better than an inviting doormat and today's feet wipers come in a variety of decorative designs.
  • People often choose a mat that reflects the exterior door area of their home and they want something dependable, useful and decorative.
  • Coir is a coarse fiber that comes from the husk of the coconut. Designs can be stenciled using fade-resistant dyes.
  • Geometric doormats constructed of natural and bleached coir fibers woven together are a popular choice.

  • A hedgehog boot scraper brings a lot of personality to the front door but it's also very practical to avoid tracking dirt into your home (figure A).
  • Teak is another smart material for a doormat since it's a very durable wood and ages well.

  • A good shake or shot of water from the hose will keep welcome mats looking fresh and tidy.
  • Personalize an inexpensive outdoor mat with a hand-cut monogram Mylar stencil. Protect the edges with plastic and spray-paint the taped image onto the mat (figure B).
