Figure B
Host Renai Ellison shows how to create a mosaic garden column with a simple wooden box and broken plates.

Materials:

ceramic plates
safety gloves
safety goggles
hammer
grout adhesive
tongue depressor
wooden column
tile nipper
tile adhesive
wet brush or rough sponge
spoon

Steps:

  1. Choose plates that have colors and designs that match your decor.

  2. Put on safety gloves and goggles, wrap a plate in a towel, and use a hammer to break the plate (figure A). You'll have to strike the plate several times.

  3. Apply tile adhesive generously to a ceramic piece with a tongue depressor and adhere to the column. Place pieces randomly on the column.

  4. If a piece of ceramic is too big or doesn't fit properly, use tile nippers to cut it down to size. Cover column completely (figure B). Let dry.

  5. Fill in gaps completely with grout. Let dry.

  6. Use a wet brush or rough sponge to clean off tile pieces. You can also use the flat side of a spoon.
