Host Renai Ellison shows how to create a mosaic garden column with a simple wooden box and broken plates.
Materials:
ceramic plates
safety gloves
safety goggles
hammer
grout adhesive
tongue depressor
wooden column
tile nipper
tile adhesive
wet brush or rough sponge
spoon
Steps:
- Choose plates that have colors and designs that match your decor.
- Put on safety gloves and goggles, wrap a plate in a towel, and use a hammer to break the plate (figure A). You'll have to strike the plate several times.
- Apply tile adhesive generously to a ceramic piece with a tongue depressor and adhere to the column. Place pieces randomly on the column.
- If a piece of ceramic is too big or doesn't fit properly, use tile nippers to cut it down to size. Cover column completely (figure B). Let dry.
- Fill in gaps completely with grout. Let dry.
- Use a wet brush or rough sponge to clean off tile pieces. You can also use the flat side of a spoon.
