Copper Garden Torches

Materials:

copper fitting (that makes a larger pipe fit into a smaller pipe)
three copper wires
rubber glove
epoxy putty
copper mesh
wire cutters
clothespins
vice
gold craft wire (meant for sewing)
long copper pole

Steps:

  1. Wearing a rubber glove, mold the blue-and-white putty together in your hand until it turns gray (figure A). Do this quickly before the putty hardens.

  2. Place the putty in the fitting, then insert the three wires in a triangular fashion (figure B). Invert, so that the piece sits like a tripod. Allow to dry.

  3. Cut a square shape of copper mesh to wrap around the copper wires. Cut a slit in the mesh from the center edge into the center of the mesh (figure C). Turn under the rough, raw edges around the perimeter.

  4. Twirl the mesh into a cone, holding in place with clothespins. Fit the mesh around the wires, using a vice to hold the copper fitting and wire in place (figure D) .

  5. Sew the mesh to the gold craft wire. Remove the clothespins, then fit the torch into a long copper pole and place in the garden. A votive candle in the middle will look great with this!
