Creating a Planting Bed

A curved planting bed can be accomplished with rather simple tools.

Steps:
  1. Make a sculpted bed using a garden hose--be sure to leave it in the sun for a while to make it pliable (figure A).

  • Cut into the edge line next to the hose with a straight-edged shovel (figure B). Turn around and repeat procedure on the reserve side to remove the grass (figure C). Remove as much dirt as possible and put the grass aside.

  • Use the same shovel to remove the grass from the bed so it doesn't grow into the new plantings. Bend down low to loosen the top layer (figure D) and remove it.
  • Once the grass is removed, add topsoil as needed for proper drainage and growing conditions.

    Note: Use the grass clumps to patch bare spots in the lawn. Rough up the soil and water well.
