Materials:
concrete garden sculpture
distressing tools -- hammer, metal files, rasp, wire brush
black or off-white satin latex or acrylic paint
MQS scumble glazes: moss, dark brown and black
MQS metallic over glaze: antique bronze and copper
French brush and an old "dust" brush
terry cloth
spritzer bottle and water
safety goggles
Steps:
- Wear safety goggles and put down paper to catch cement dust and chips.
- Distress your concrete, mimicking years of use and remove any mold that may have formed. Note: Files, rasps, wire brushes and a hammer work to soften edges. Use caution with the hammer to avoid an unwanted break.
- Clean sculpture with the dust brush; discard used paper and replace with fresh.
- Use a French brush to apply off-white paint where desired on sculpture (it doesn't have to be completely covered to make the piece look old and worn).
- Starting with black and then dark brown, brush on scumble glazes, allowing them to sink into crevices.
- Alternately spritz with a little water, rub with terry cloth then add more black and dark brown glaze until the desired depth of color is achieved.
- Accent with moss green and moss green/dark brown glazes for the worn look of time.
