Q&A: Artistic Garden

Grow It! : Episode GRW-401 -- More Projects »
Can you suggest an artistic way to combine foliage in the garden?

To create a magical look with a small planting group, combine a few plants with contrasting colors and textures: a cycad (Cycas), Zones 10-11, an artillery plant (Pilea microphylla; not hardy below 59 degrees F) and a bromeliad (Bromelia ), Zones 10-11, are featured here. The dark green leaves of the cycad contrast with the tiny yellow-green leaves of the artillery plant sited beneath it. The bromeliad provides a burst of color, with lime-green leaves blushed with a deep rose in the center. Experiment with a variety of combinations to find groupings that will work well in a given area.
