When it's time for a change of scenery but you don't have free time, what do you do?
Gardening by the Yard host Paul James introduces landscape architect Cynthia Patton and they discuss the best way to choose a designer or architect to help you change the look of your yard.
Patton takes us through the planning process and explains that a landscape architect's job does not begin with a pre-fabricated design. Instead, she and the client meet so Patton can receive input from the client. This is important because it helps her blend what the client envisions with what is possible.
After the initial consultation, Patton begins an overall plan for the landscape design. The plan is devised from a variety of factors--the lay of the land, drainage needs, light exposure, soil conditions and budget. The goal is to create a unified project rather than a mere representation of the design.
The client may wish to implement the plan in steps or all at once; there is no such thing as an "instant" landscape unless a crew is brought in to do the work. The final product should be a blend of the wishes of the homeowner/client and the work of the landscape architect.
