It's easy to turn a plain porch into a welcoming winter wonderland. When gathering materials, think about the color and style of the home, then pick a theme that's complementary.

  • Natural elements, such as twigs, dried seed heads, pine cones and berries, can be mixed with artificial garland and greens. It's good to fluff the greens, then wrap them in lights.

  • Anchor a garland in place on porch railings with some very thin wire, so it will not blow in the wind. You can zigzag the garland and let some ornaments hang below for a soft, delicate effect.

  • Hang wooden branches adorned with berries from the top of the porch.

  • Use plaid and checked ribbons to tie a country theme together.

After finishing the porch, you can dress the windows by tying some sprigs of garland together with a plaid bow. Consider "wrapping" the front door like a present: string some ribbon around the frame, bring it around the front, tie it in a bow and add some garland.
