Before: This backyard hasn't been touched for 12 years. The owners would like a place for entertaining and a safe play area for their daughters.

After: Once the broken hot tub is removed, the space opens up for new plants, furniture and accessories that combine to make the Fedail's yard beautifully functional.
Lewy Fedail doesn't have a clue about design and he's desperate for some help on his neglected backyard. He has asked host Susie Coelho and Outer Spaces to give his wife, Maureen, and their twin girls a place where they can entertain and that they can enjoy as a family.

Recycle an old chandelier from a thrift store as the base for painted terra-cotta pots full of lobelia, ivy and succulents and add candles for a soft glow. Glue the pots in place so they don't fall off and hang it low for easy maintenance.

The bare area under the existing trees is now lush with fuschia, pale green succulents, variegated liriope and gardenias, all of which get a splash of color from pink hydrangeas.
Designer Jennifer Kaplan's plan calls for creating a grassy area for a relaxing bubbling urn where the existing broken hot tub is, putting shade-loving plants under the existing trees and an outdoor room under the pergola for entertaining. The new furniture includes lounge chairs, a buffet with a mirror over it to reflect candlelight and a seating area with comfortable chairs along with a large tiled coffee table resting on two large urns. Finally, Kaplan's twist on a hanging planter over the coffee table with candles will add soft lighting at night.

Turn urns and plywood covered in tiles into a versatile outdoor table for entertaining.
A comfortable and functional seating area can host a romantic dinner for two and allows for child supervision while entertaining guests. Two days of hard work has turned this drab and dysfunctional backyard into a stunning space with country class.
