Q&A: Cut Flowers

Gardening by the Yard : Episode GBY-515 -- More Projects »
Q: What's the best way to keep cut flowers fresh?

A: I've heard experts recommend everything from aspirin to clear soft drinks to pennies, and through the years I have tried them all. I've also tried several different products specially developed to extend the life of cut flowers. In my opinion, the best solution is the cheapest and it's called fresh water. If you'll simply take time to change the water in your flower vases--every day or at least every other day--your flowers will stay as fresh as they would with some sort of additive. If you will make a fresh cut on the stems at the same time you change the water, they'll last even longer.
