Multi-Season Borders

Way to Grow : Episode WTG-246 -- More Projects »
Disney horticulturist Heather Will-Browne discusses the pros and cons of single-season and multi-season borders and suggests specific plant varieties for each. She also shares suggestions on planting borders in northern and southern climates. Featured highlights include:

Single-Season Borders

  • Sunflowers
  • Marigolds
  • Celosia
  • Zinnias
  • Amaranthus

Pros: Provide a vibrant burst of color, making them ideal for highly visible areas (such as the front yard); require little or no maintenance; offer ample versatility (can be given a completely different look with new plants each season).

Cons: The effect, although dramatic, is short-lived; the entire border must be replanted every season.

Multi-Season Borders

  • Petunias (northern climates)
  • Pansies (northern climates)
  • Cosmos (northern climates)
  • Melampodium (southern climates)
  • Miniature roses (southern climates)
  • Blue salvia (southern climates)
  • Verbena, perennial (southern climates)
  • Scaveola (southern climates)

Pros: Relatively long life span, work well against dull backdrops (such as a plain fence that needs a facelift).

Cons: Less dramatic impact than single-season borders.
