Bonsai

Although master gardener Paul James prides himself on being a low-maintenance, low-impact gardener, he is fascinated by the art of bonsai, despite the fact that these plants are often pruned severely, require regular applications of fertilizer, need special care and attention and are manipulated to the extreme. Some in his collection are tropicals and are for display indoors, although they can be left outdoors from spring through fall. But the bulk of Paul's bonsai are strictly outdoor plants. Among the tropical selections, here's a five-year-old Jaboticaba. It makes a simple but refined statement with its upright form, small leaves, smooth bark and beautiful branching.
