Japanese Theme

Curb Appeal : Episode CRB-209 -- More Projects »
Designer Louise Leff starts by giving the home an entry that is accessible and easy to navigate. The path is curved for a touch of elegance. She brings balance to the yard with a classic Japanese touch. She installs a sweeping, low timber edging made of darkly stained wood.

Next come the plantings. Leff is working from a Japanese palette, using several types of evergreens. Instead of mulching this area, she sets the plants in a smooth, clean expanse of granite in a golden hue. This is an elegant and manicured touch that's in keeping with a Japanese look that has a bit of color added. She also adds a vertical standing rock that makes a striking statement in the front entry.

Leff's next move is adding a graceful lily pond that will become a defining feature of the new landscape. To keep in the Japanese style, the pond must appear as naturally in this landscape as it would in nature. A hole is dug for the pond, lined and filled with water.

Finally, a stone bench is placed beside the pond for a focal point. This is another Japanese touch, using materials right from nature that provide a place for quiet moments, reflections or meditation.
