You can make tall planters from posts. Here's how:

What you need

  • One standard 4x4 redwood post
  • Two 2x4's
  • Two 2x6's
  • Screws or nails
  • Roofing tar
  • Paint, if desired
  • Flowers of your choice

What you do

  1. Measure how tall you want the planter post to be (figure A) and cut a 4x4 post to the desired length. (Remember to take into account how far into the ground the post will be, and use safety equipment when using power tools or cutting tools.) Paint the post and the 2x4 and 2x6 pieces, if desired.
  2. Attach two 2x4 pieces (figure B) and two 2x6 pieces to the ends of the 4x4 post with screws or nails, leaving about a foot extending beyond the end of the 4x4. This forms the space that will hold the plant.
  3. Dig a hole and set the post in; fill around the post with concrete.
  4. Paint the inside of the planting post with roofing cement or wet/dry patching tar (figure C). The roofing tar will help keep the wood from rotting when you water your plants. Let dry.
  5. Plant the post with the flowers of your choice (figure D).
