Host Kathi Cardinalli demonstrates how to antique a galvanized tub, then use it to create a small water garden that is sure to be the focal point of any garden
(see photo at right).
Materials:
moist sea sponge
paint (most any kind will do--house paint, craft paint, etc.)
galvanized tub
river gravel
wall glazing (dark green, lighter green and gray) for antiquing process
mosquito repellent pellets
Steps:
- Dip moist sea sponge into a deep green paint, the blot on the surface of the galvanized tub (figure A).
- Then, add a lighter green, followed by a gray to help cover up the shiny galvanized tub.
- Remove the plant from its container, then add unfertilized potting soil, followed by gravel to hold in the soil and keep the plant from turning over in the water (figure B).
- Add to the water in the tub. The tub should only about 1/3 full because of the volume of the plants that will be added.
- Add taller plants to a rear area of the water garden. For shorter plants, rest them on a brick to elevate them.
- Marsh marigolds, purple pickerelweed, rush grass, water iris, large and small umbrella plants, water lilies and floaters (such as water hyacinths) would do well here.
- Fertilizer tablets should be pushed under the gravel down into the soil.
- Mosquito dunks or doughnuts in the water will minimize insect problems.
