Floral designer Ardith Beveridge visits
TIPical Mary Ellen and shares some ideas for creative indoor plant containers with host Mary Ellen Pinkham.
- A metal pail makes an attractive indoor plant container. Always use a plastic liner in a metal container before transplanting. The soil should not be touching any metal. An empty potato-salad container makes a good liner.
- Do not punch drainage holes in the plastic liner. Instead, put in a layer of charcoal followed by a layer of another material such as bark chips, pebbles, marbles or even seashells. The charcoal will absorb odors, and the elevation provided by the other material will give the roots some breathing room.
- Remove the plant from its original pot, and plant directly into the liner. Always lightly water plants before transplanting.
- Use an old birdhouse or a bird nest as an indoor plant container. Be sure to sanitize items such as these that have come in from outside. They could contain disease-carrying bugs that may come in along with the old birdhouse and infest the indoor plants. Add one teaspoon of bleach to a spray bottle filled with water and spray containers with this solution.
- Place stones in the bottom of any planter that may be top-heavy.
- Make sure liners fit properly inside plant containers to avoid water leaking.
- Move plants from container to container, while still planted in the plastic liner. Place in a coffee cup when having friends over for coffee, or place in an old kitchen canister to decorate a kitchen.
- Don't put a plant in anything with a lot of value, sentimental or otherwise, such as a treasured antique.
