Figure D
Host Renai Ellison shows how to use a few simple tools to create poetic garden pots for indoor and outdoor use (see photo at right).

Materials:

terra-cotta pots in various sizes and shapes
acrylic paint in white and other colors of choice
water
sponge
decoupage glue
cutouts of words from magazines
brayer
rice paper
calligraphy marker pens in black and metallic colors
metallic leaf

Steps:

  1. Clean and dry pots well before beginning this project.

  2. Mix white acrylic paint with water and paint the pot that has been chosen with one coat of the white wash (figure B). Be sure to paint the inside as well. Cover any designs that are not to be seen.

  3. Mix paints (teal, almond, black and white--mostly white--work well together).

  4. Dip a sponge into the paint, dabbing the excess onto a paper towel, then apply to the pot in small sections (figure C). Do not cover the pot completely so that the aged antiqued look can be achieved.

  5. Liberally brush decoupage glue on one side of the pot.

  6. Glue on a piece of paper with a poem or other written passage on it. Add glue to the edges as necessary, then smooth with the brayer (figure D). Another option is to attach rice paper on the other side of the pot with decoupage glue, tearing off edges first for a rustic, textured look. Use a brayer to finish up the adhesive process.

  7. Write a personal message on the rice paper with a calligraphy pen or marker.

  8. Sponge paint over edges of paper to blend with rest of pot. Make sure the pot is dry before blending.

  9. Use more glue to add metallic leaf to the rim. Brush off excess with a dry brush for a finished look.
