Winter Window Boxes

Winter Gardener : Episode TWG-102 -- More Projects »
During the winter, window boxes often get neglected, still holding the dead plants left over from spring and summer. Instead, you can turn your window box into a year-round garden by planting with varieties that can grow and bloom in early winter.

Materials:

  • window box
  • potting soil
  • ornamental kale
  • pansies and violas--various colors
  • American bittersweet (accenting vine)
  • 'Blue Girl' holly
  • evergreens--junipers, boxwood prunings
  • ponderosa pine cones
  • johnny jump-ups

Instructions:

  • Remove old annuals.
  • Fill the window box with potting mix to one inch below the top.
  • Place ornamental kale in the center for height.
  • Add the pansies (tease roots before planting) and the violas.
  • For more accents when these plants die off (once it turns cold), try adding American bittersweet, holly or evergreen prunings.
  • Water thoroughly.
