Q&A: Aluminum Wrap

Gardening by the Yard : Episode GBY-611 -- More Projects »
Q: Have you heard of wrapping patio pots with aluminum foil to keep them cool?

A: It seems to be a popular recommendation for gardeners who live in extremely hot climates where potted patio plants can dry out in a matter of hours. The idea is that if you wrap a clay pot with foil, it will reflect the heat of the sun and prevent the pot from drying out so quickly. As a bonus, the foil will help deter insects that get totally disoriented because of the reflection. Even if this technique works, I can't imagine a patio full of foil-wrapped pots. Can you?
