Host Mary Ellen Pinkham shows how to turn empty plastic soda bottles into useful household items.
  • Make a twine dispenser for the workshop. Here's how: Cut the bottom end off of a plastic bottle and insert a spool of string in the top. Thread the loose end of the string through the mouth of the bottle. Place a pair of scissors in the bottle with the twine and nail it to the wall in the workshop (see photo).

  • Avoid creases around the ankles of tall boots by placing a narrow soda bottle in each boot before putting the boots away in the closet. The boots will stand at attention.

  • Cut the top off a large soda bottle and use it as a makeshift canister to hold spaghetti.

  • The top of a plastic bottle makes a great funnel to fill mason jars or other containers. Cut the top to the size of funnel needed.

  • Make a hot-water bottle. Fill a plastic bottle with hot water and cap tightly. Wrap a thin dishtowel around the bottle and use it to relieve sore muscles.

  • Fill bottles with water and freeze them. Use to relieve sore, aching muscles or put in the cooler to keep items chilled.

  • A plastic bottle makes a great plant feeder. Add water and fertilizer to the bottle and mix well. Cap the bottle to save any unused amount. Be sure to label the bottle so everyone's knows that it contains plant food.
