Q&A: Moving Perennials

Gardening by the Yard : Episode GBY-405 -- More Projects »
I have perennials growing in containers on my patio. Can I transplant them into my garden this fall?

Of course, assuming the perennials in question are hardy in your zone. In fact, transplanting container-grown perennials is a great way to get double-duty out of them, because you can enjoy them during the spring and the summer on your patio, then enjoy them for years to come in the garden.

To transplant, carefully remove the plant from its pot, score the roots a bit with a knife without disturbing the root ball too much, and put it into a freshly prepared planting hole. Because the transplanting process is a bit stressful to a plant, give it a good soaking with a dilute solution of compost tea, if possible.
