Q&A: Crackproof Clay

Gardening by the Yard : Episode GBY-515 -- More Projects »
Q: Does anyone make clay pots that can be left outdoors year round without cracking?

A: Such pots are available from several manufacturers and retail shops. What makes them crack-proof, even when left outside in freezing temperatures, is that they're carefully crafted with a high-quality clay and double-fired. They're very often glazed as well. As a result, they're expensive when compared to cheap terra-cotta pots. They can be beautiful too, and they look great on the patio as well as in the home. These pots are expensive compared to the standard terra cotta ones, but many come with a lifetime guarantee, and the relatively easy breakage of terra cotta probably makes the more expensive pots at least as cheap in the long run.
