Caring for Cacti

Master gardener Jonathan Pedersen shows how to plant and care for cacti and other succulents.

Cacti are part of the succulent family. All cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti. There are hundreds of different types of cacti.
If you get a needle stuck in your finger, just place a piece of tape over the needle, then pull the tape off along with the needle.
Wear gloves when potting a cactus.
Use a cactus potting mix. It's fairly coarse, which helps the drainage of the plant.
Cacti don't need a lot of water and can go for a very long time without it.
After you plant the cactus, place a decorative rock over the top, which will help with drainage.
They like full sun and heat.
Place on a windowsill because they need to be in a place where they can experience both daytime and nighttime. They breathe at night when it is cooler, so be sure that there is a temperature difference there.
Use a cacti fertilizer to fertilize.
