Master gardener Jonathan Pedersen shows how to plant and care for cacti and other succulents.

  • Cacti are part of the succulent family. All cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti. There are hundreds of different types of cacti.

  • If you get a needle stuck in your finger, just place a piece of tape over the needle, then pull the tape off along with the needle.

  • Wear gloves when potting a cactus.

  • Use a cactus potting mix. It's fairly coarse, which helps the drainage of the plant.

  • Cacti don't need a lot of water and can go for a very long time without it.

  • After you plant the cactus, place a decorative rock over the top, which will help with drainage.

  • They like full sun and heat.

  • Place on a windowsill because they need to be in a place where they can experience both daytime and nighttime. They breathe at night when it is cooler, so be sure that there is a temperature difference there.

  • Use a cacti fertilizer to fertilize.
