Moving a cactus to a new container can easily turn into a "thorny" situation. Here, host John Cretti shares tips on protecting hands and arms from thorns when dealing with these popular yet prickly plants.
Materials:
- cacti soil
- newspaper
- gloves
- toothbrush
Transplanting Guidelines:
- Fill a porous clay pot with soil-less cacti/succulent mix (make sure the container has a drainage hole before adding the mix).
- After filling the pot, tap it gently on a counter or table to slightly loosen the mix.
- Fold several layers of newspaper to a size that will wrap easily around the cactus.
- Wearing gloves, wrap the newspaper around the cactus and lift it out of its container.
- Place the cactus in the partially filled clay pot, then add more potting mix to secure the plant in place.
- Water the cactus, and top the surface of the potting mix with gravel, if desired.
- When the cactus becomes dusty or dirty, clean it gently with a toothbrush or makeup brush.
