Seed Pellets

Make your own seed pellets out of wildflower seeds. Encasing the seeds in bits of clay protects them from hungry birds and hot sun and will also help them get a good start in your wildflower garden.

Materials:

  • Thick, heavy clay.
  • Compost sifting box (wire mesh nailed onto a frame).
  • Wildflower seed (make sure the seeds are native or will grow well in your area).

Instructions:

  1. Pour the seed into the bucket of soil (figure A). Mix well. If the soil feels too dry, add a little water until the mixture has the consistency of a thick gumbo.
  2. Rub handfuls of the mixture through the hardware screen (figure B). Catch the droppings below. You'll end up with a pile of small soil fragments, each pellet containing a seed or two.
  3. When the pellets are dry, cast them in prepared soil.
