Forcing Bulbs

Longing for bright blooms in the middle of winter? Try planting bulbs in the fall in pots or other containers, then covering them with straw. Store the containers in a window well for several weeks and gradually move them to a warmer area to force the blooms.

Materials

  • window well cover
  • pots (either bulb pans or clay pots)
  • bulbs: daffodils, tulips
  • trowel
  • leaves
  • plastic foam cooler

Instructions

    Fill the pot half-full with soil and place five to seven bulbs on top of the soil (figure A), pointed ends up.

    Add more soil on top, as if you were planting the bulbs outside. Water thoroughly.

The plants will root when provided a dark and cool (but not freezing) environment. Place the pot in a basement window and cover it with leaves or straw (figure B). If you have no basement, you can place the straw-covered pot in a plastic foam cooler in an unheated garage.
