Growing From Seed

Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-318 -- More Projects »
Gardening expert Marianne Binetti explains which types of seeds are the easiest to grow into plants. She also explains simple care and fertilizing tips for seedlings.

Growing Tips

  • The easiest seeds to grow are radishes and tomatoes, as well as flowering impatiens and nasturtiums.

  • The best location to place a mini-greenhouse is near a windowsill, avoiding direct or too-intense sunlight, or on top of the refrigerator, which emits warm air.

Takeout-Container Greenhouse

Steps:

  1. Save plastic takeout containers and poke holes through the top and bottom.

  2. Fill with soil and seeds, using an old toothbrush as a digging tool.

  3. Mist gently with a spray bottle.

Egg-Carton Greenhouse

Steps:

  1. Poke small holes through the bottom of cardboard egg cartons.

  2. Save halved eggshells, poke a small hole through the bottom and fill with soil and a seed.

  3. After a seedling sprouts, replant the shell into a larger pot, allowing the shell to crush in the new soil.

* Note: The eggshell will provide the plant with a healthy dose of calcium.

Muffin-Tin Greenhouse

Steps:

  1. Fill tin with cupcake liners.

  2. Fill liners with soil and a seed. (A great trick for being able to spot planted seeds is to mix them with sand before handling.)

  3. Seedlings react well to fertilizer, but only after four sprouts have formed. Dilute the fertilizer in a misting spray bottle.
