Layering Bulbs

Way to Grow : Episode WTG-230 -- More Projects »
Bulb expert Sally Ferguson joins host John Greenlee to demonstrate the technique of layering bulbs. Ferguson explains that "triple-decker" planting bulbs in three layers is a great project for gardeners who have limited space or who simply want to add a colorful container to an existing landscape. For best results, she recommends the following steps:

  • First, plant daffodils then add soil.
  • Next, plant tulips and top with more soil.
  • Then, add smaller bulbs such as crocus and grape hyacinths.
  • If desired, top the planted bulbs with blooming pansies, which will often last throughout the winter.

The bulbs that will bloom earliest such as crocus are planted on top, later blooming varieties will grow up through the spent bulbs.
